Ok Folks Many Of You Have Read Niki's Post On Pinioning Quail, If So You've Seen My Entries On That String---- I Pinioned 57 Or 58 Birds On Saturday 7/4/09 All Were Between 2 And 4 Wks Old. Most Of The Birds Were My Butler Bob White Babies. For Those Of You Unversed In Bob Whites The Butlers Are The "jaba The Hut"'s Of The Bob White Quail Speces. Big Ones Can Reach 32 Oz.'s At Maturity. These Guys Are The Sumo Wrestler Of The Quail World. But Dispite Their Grandios Size They Are Still Bob Whites Which To Say The Least Are Flush Prone Flighty Birds. All Were Put Into An "infirmary Brooder" To Heal After The Pinioning. I Had 1 Fatality The 1st Night Due To A Burnt Out Brooder Lamp--- They Huddled And He Was A Smaller Chick So He Got Trampled To Death--- Unfortunate But As We All Know-- It Happens. Otherwise All Have Done Quite Well. The Pinion Wnds Are All Healing Nicely. And While They Are Still "spaz" Cases In The Brooder, A Quick Flight Update Lesson--- Fly Be Free With A Gentle Toss From Waist High Level--- The Results Were Fabulously Identical---- Every Bird Tried To Fly Like A Maniac All With A Resulting Thump On The Carpet Within 2-3 Ft Of The Release Point. I Suppose It's At This Moment When The Quail Are All Saying "what The Heck? This Aint Right! Whats Going On Here?" Then They Notice My Trusty Labs And All The Sudden They Become Lil Redneck Parrots--- Pick Me Up And Hold Me! ==== They Are Cured!! Woo Hoo! Soon As The Older Stock Has Died Off Or Been Liquidated In 1 Form Or The Other I Am Throwing The Fish Net Away! Because From Now On I Will Pinion All Hatchlings We Have! The Resulting Attitude Adjustment Is Well Worth Any Amount Of Work It Is To Me, Or Discomfort It Is To Them! Since I Do Not Raise My Birds For Stock Or Training Purposes I Raise Them For Breeding The New Found Quietness In Them Is Amazing.

Any Of You Who Raises Bob White That Impared Flight Is Not Detrimental I Highly Suggest Pinioning--- The Difference You Will Achieve With "handleability" Is Well Worth It By Ten Fold!

Don't throw your net away! Send it to me!! I had to play chase the chukars for a couple hours the other day because they got out of their cage and I don't have a net

Talk about aggravating! Good thing they are very young or I probably would not have seen them again!
Good to hear that they are all healing well, I am seriously considering pinioning these chukars! Not sure how well they'll do though......And not sure I can handle the blood

NOTHIN TO IT! 1 SHARP SET OF FISKAR'S KITCHEN SHEARS AND IT'S QUICK AND EASY. AS FAR AS BLOOD JUST GRAB 1 SNIP AND SET IT DOWN AND DONT LOOK BACK AT THE CUT ONES UNTIL AFTER YOU'RE DONE WITH ALL OF THEM!

A Good Cure For The Blood.... Go To Your Local Mom And Pop Pharmacy And Get A Tub Of Sublimed Sulfur--- Its Just Sulfur Powder... Poor Some Out Into A Small Sandwich Bag And Roll The Top Down On The Bag So You Can Get Their Lil Wings Into It Easy. Then When You Snip Them You Just Dab The Wound Right Down Into The Sulfur Powder And It Will Stop The Bleeding Quick! It Also Has Antimicrobial Properties So It Will Act As An Infection Deterent As Well...

I don't think I'd have too much of a 'Oooh that's gross!!' reaction, it would be more of a 'Ohhhh, the poor babies
