Something I've noticed this year and because I've only attempted to hatch eggs once before, I'm trying to pay attention to as many details as possible. (My first hatch did not go so well.)
So a couple months back I tried my second hatch. It was early in the spring so my ladies had just started getting in to full production. Well I had some hatching issues. I helped 2 get out of their shell and I had 3 that pipped but didn't hatch, but I had 4 that hatched normally; and so I now have 5 very healthy chicks. (Still WAY more successful than my 1st try.)
What I have come to notice is now that the girls have been laying a while their egg shells and membranes are thinner. Not bad, but definitely noticable when making breakfast.
Could my hatching difficulties be related to excess calcium built up over the winter months, which might have caused the shells and membranes to be slightly too thick for the chicks to manage?
