My older hen gives off one egg a day even in the cold months. All of a sudden zero? Ah, she’s six years old, sex he goes in her box pretends etc. etc.
Wrong! This is our weekend ranch in the mountains, we are there Friday thru Monday and since the quarantine I work one day a week so we are now at our retreat everyday! So, I see this very friendly squirrel robbing our suspended feeder and since weather was nasty for couple weeks I let him get his belly filled, but then I see another rolling an egg down the ladder from her box area and trying to get it out of the open door to the run!
Never in a million years would have expected this to happen.

Nesting squirrels need more protein than usual for nursing young. They will steal eggs and kill chicks to get that protein. Squirrel proofing a coop is fairly easily done, free range, well keep the gate closed till time to go to roost.
