I have a one year old chicken who's been laying rather rough eggs lately, and fairly thin-shelled. They do have access to oyster shell/ layer feed and everyone else is laying fine (ie - smooth-thick shelled). I saw her today sort of just standing in the yard and noticed a thin strip of eggshell hanging out of her vent - I pulled part of it out but the rest disappeared inside. What could be going on with her? Is there anything I can do for her? She seems pretty mopey. Thanks for your help!

your going to have to give her a warm bath and very carefully TRY to remove the shells! get out all you can then put her on a antibiotic because infection is likely going to set in and the antibiotic will help a lot. if you don't get the shells out it will cut her insides so do your best to remove what you can then put her on a general anti infective like Gallamycine while her body trays to expel the rest of the shell left. hope this helps. good luck. best wishes

Ok, so I bathed her and the vent area is clear and going to get antibiotics. I do feel an egg-shaped object in her abdomen but not too close to her vent - any suggestions about keeping things moving? Not sure if she's retaining eggs or is just sick. Thanks
