Thin Shells

I have a white Leghorn hen who is 17 weeks and 6 days old. She laid her first egg but not in the nesting box. RIght on the floor of the coop!! Her second egg she laid the next day and it's shells were very thin and the raw yoke spilled on the pine shavings. The shell was very thin and it either fell of the roost where the hen laid it or it got stepped on by another chicken. What do I do?

! Pleased you joined us. Chances are nothing is wrong. As she just started laying, hens often lay a few odd eggs until their system gets it right. I assume she is on proper feed and has access to calcium like crushed oyster shell? Monitor her - I think she will start to lay normal eggs soon. Thank you, Dnetschke I feed my chickens Dumor Layer, Manna Pro Harvest Delight Treats, Grit, and lettuce in the winter. 1 Jersey Giant rooster, 1 Barred Rock hen, 1 Buff orpington Hen, a rhode island red hen, an easter egger hen, and a white leghorn(who happened to lay first egg). Welcome to BYC. As redsoxs has said very frequently a hen will have some irregularities in egg production early in her egg laying cycle. 17 weeks is very young, but leghorns are early layers. She will most likely stabilize.
