Two of my 8 month old aracuana crosses have very little barbs or mass to their tail feathers. The feathers on the top of their backs are untidy as well. They were normal until about 3 weeks ago, where the white one began having untidy feathers. I assumed it was due to her being broody and getting messed up in the coop.
The brown one has had messy feathers for about a week.

Is this a symptom of a disease, or just bad genetics? I also put a picture of a black hen whose feathers are normal.

Several separate causes of such feather degradation come to mind. One is depluming mites. Ivermectin can treat them. Another is simple wear and tear approaching molt. If it's summer where you are, these hens may be getting ready to molt. Another cause is feather picking abuse from other chickens. Yet another cause is an avian virus affecting feather regrowth.

Thank you! I'll look into all of those. It is summer at the moment but they arent showing any other signs of moulting.

Oh okay, thank you! I'll look out for signs of the other things you mentioned but not do anything for now. Looking into the depluming mites, they dont seem uncomfortable and have lots of places to dustbathe, so I think you're right about moulting.
