Thing fell off hens leg

I noticed something hanging off one of our americanas legs, in trying to look she kicked and it fell off, what is it? It looks like she has on about a quarter of the size on the other leg but she’s mad and won’t let me look at her now

She has really bad scales leg mites and now the damages scales a shedding.
Rub her Legs down with nustock or Vaseline every day for a few weeks to kill them.
I'd also clean out the coop and spring permethrine poultry diet around and get new bedding.

Okay thank you! She had problems with leg mites when I got her last year but they weren’t to this point and we got them taken care of before winter. None of the other birds look like they are having mite issues, but I will put Vaseline on their legs to, just to be safe.

Can you post pictures of the legs? A daily warm soapy soak to the legs for a few days, using an old toothbrush to clean the scales before using petroleum jelly to smother the leg mites may help. Repeat the oil 2 times a week until new scales grow in. Some also use a sulfur based cream, Nustock which will kill the leg mites.

If you decide to use Nu-Stock, make sure you shake the tube well and wear disposable gloves. It doesnt take much to slather the legs. Also, put a light coat of vaseline or Nu-stock on roosts. Either will prevent the mites crawling from the infected bird to other birds.
