Things I have learned since getting chickens...

OK-- I am sure there is a thread or two like this out there, but I am CONSTANTLY learning something new, or being taught a lesson by my chickens. So here are yesterday's epiphanies:

A- It is a bad idea to chew gum when I am cleaning the coop. It is dusty in there, and I apparently chew with my mouth open.

B- When designing a PVC pipe auto feeder, do not make the feed intake too high. I am 6'1" in heels, but the feed bags are heavy, and I am a wuss. If it is too high, I will have to lift the bag over my head, balance it on top of my head, steady the bag with one hand, aim the pouring feed with the other, and then raise up on tippy-toes to intiate the tipping of the bag. Plus, it is highly unlikely I will be in the coop with kitty heels on.

Anyone else learn something today?

Last night I learned that it is better to spend the extra $1.15 for the 50lb bag of cracked corn then spending an hour with a hand grist and doing it myself. Wow my arm hurts!

You dont have to crack the corn but if you want to slap it in the blender ..works great!
Crack all eggs in a seperate bowl not in the bowl with your dry bread ingredients!

Things I'VE learned since getting chickens...
--Mow the weeds with your bagged mower, and empty it into the chicken run for comsumption, INSTEAD of hand weeding!
--Use your birds as a garbage disposal for potato scrapings, older lettuce, and older cabbage INSTEAD of throwing them away.
(MY birds won't eat cucumbers, so I give those to the horses who also take priority on carrot scrapings.)
--Don't waste time spreading bedding. Let the birds do it themselves.
--Chickens are smarter than rabbits.
--Chickens don't stay up to watch sunsets.
--You have to train your chickens to lay in a box, otherwise they go "rogue" and lay "wherever."
--Eventually all chickens will find the roost you built for them.
