Things That Chicken Eat That Surprised You

Quote:
I have seen people recommend a small amount of cat food while chickens are molting for the extra protein to grow nice shiny feathers. I suspect the "Small amounts" is due to salt in the canned cat food, And I have never read anyone saying "no, don't give them cat food", and you know someone would if it wasn't a good idea.

I end up flicking the things off my plants with a trowel... and then jumping around with shivers and making faces because they give me the willies. my hubby thinks it's hysterical

Lmao!!! They are VERY creepy! Ticks do that to me...

My chickens loooooove spaghetti, they gooble it up like there's no tomorrow. Also once they ate a copperhead snake :O I'm pretty sure chickens are related to pigs...

At least you know it and excuse yourself for it lol. You're right, they are closest to dinos and in my opinion they still are dinosaurs !

The feather thing could be a need for protein but I was surprised when

my chickens caught their first frog and fought over it.
caught their first mouse and fought over it.

They don't seem to like the taste of moles though.

Yeah neither my chickens nor my cats like moles. Of course I'm over-run with them since our dog passed away so there's no one running around creating vibrations and chasing the moles off. And I'm afraid to put anything down to kill or chase them off because I'm afraid the chickens will eat whatever it is! I don't even use dyed mulch anymore!

Shrimp shells. My chickens go NUTS over shrimp shells! Spiced, unspiced, they don't care. They go crazy over them. Some friends have said their birds are rather fond of cantaloupe and watermelon rinds. Not mine!

My goofy chikens started eating the drywall compound from my clothes. Are they still considered organic chikens? They also eat rose petals and stink bugs.

my speckled sussex loves slugs.. ugg..

glad they are getting eaten tho.. in general mine really like fruit and veggies we toss out - watermelon rinds, apples, cantalope, grapes, tomatoes, giant zuch's. They are generally suspicious of everything, but our precocious RIR Sophie beta tests everything and then the rest join in.
