Disaster

yesterday was the hottest day this year - 87* and we think the heat caused us to loose a clutch of BR turk's.

we thought yesterday was supposed to be her hatch dates so we kept checking turkey hen#1- who was doing so great. well nothing all day so when we went out in the evening we found that she had left her nest, climbed over the fence (!!!!?!?!) and had crawled in with turkey hen #2. we dont know how long the eggs were left to cool - even tho it was so hot we dont think it was warm enough to keep them viable.

the worst was when we checked the nest - evidently one of the eggs was bad and broke or exploded. ick.

we put half the clean eggs in the brooder, cleaned out then remade her nest and put her back (she sat down), and the rest were covered with the ick. ick.

so nothing to report this morning but we are pretty sure we lost that clutch. unless anyone has any better ideas we are going to give her a couple days on them them take them out from under her.

ugh - just gutting.
:-(

thanks - i really hope they are ok. i've been moping around all morning in utter woe........

this weather is just crazy - it was snowing just last week now we are in the heat of summer! must be global warming
;-)

thanks again for the encouragement. i'll keep my chin up hoping...

thanks Steve. we figured she was scared by the whole thing - she kinda had a big eyed look to her. we just got home so i'm about to trudge out and see.. but honestly this weather just is not cooperating at all! we are on our way to 90* (in town) and i dont think the big change is helping any of my gals.

thanks for the support - i've stopped sulking and on to marching on
;-)

thanks for checking!

no activity so far... nothing in the 'bator for sure. unfortunately we had another scorching hot day so thats not helping at all.

Turkey Hen #1 is still sitting and she moved the eggs a bit from where we put her back - so i'm really hoping she can hear them and thats why she is still in place.

Turkey Hen#2 didnt seem to have been impacted by all the hubbub - her's arent due to hatch for another couple days. i noticed she was singing a bit so hopefully her's are still alive.

as for me i pulled myself up by my barn boot straps and i figure that if the worst happens... i'll just order a bunch of poults from Steve!
