thinking about getting a dog, advice welcome (long-ish)

I just thought you might like this. I came across this site several years ago and have found it to have invaluable information on all kinds of dog breeds. I wish I hadn't ignored the info I had gotten when I got the pups that I had gotten. I wouldn't have had the trouble I had.

We live in a giant mosquito swamp and I can't see how we could take the dog out to do its business between dusk and sunrise in the mosquito-ey months of the year, and 10 hrs seems like a long time to expect a dog to 'hold it'. ......sounds like if you need a pet, dog or cat, you need a cat. No, dogs don't like to hold it for ten hours. As far as mosquitos, like you, I am in a mosquito swamp and I just don't leave them out there during the heavy swarming mosquito times. As far as a rescue, search hard. I love the whole rescue thing, believe me, but my dog had me in tears I can't recall how many times for the first six monthes of having her. The rescue place had her in a kennel outside on concrete so she associated anything hard as a place to pee and poop, not the grass as a place to go. She chewed up literally anything that she could get in her mouth. She dug under and jumped over fences. She also had mange. She had severe separation anxiety, even if I just went outside without her. I guess this might scare you off of rescue but don't let it. It was well worth all the effort. She still digs but not under the fence, she no longer goes pee/poop in the house, she still chews but really nothing compared to. CATS ARE BY FAR EASIER TO KEEP, except they cost (I think) about the same. Good luck, be happy, and enjoy life...hope all goes well with seeking what you want in your future.
