If you are like me and enjoy books, I recommend the United States Pony Club Manual of Horsemanship: Basics for Beginners/D-Level.

This is a great general guide to horses/ponies and focuses on safety. Find a local stable and get some lessons, nothing beats the real thing when learning (with an experienced professional!)

You may be able to find some suitable places visiting the Certified Horsemanship Association's website. This organization also focuses on safety and positive experiences with horses.

Horses are a wonderful hobby (and some are even lucky to call it a profession!) and I wish you well.
