Thinking about putting sand floor in chicken run

Does anyone know if you put sand in the chicken run, do the chickens' nails still naturally wear down like they do with compacted dirt floors? The sand floors seem much easier to keep clean and hopefully keep smell down. Just worried about their nails not being worn down....

Not sure about the nails,
but won't be easier to keep clean,
and there will be odor(unless it stays bone dry).
