Thinking about standard v.s. banties a lot . . .

Hello and welcome. I'm glad you found us! There is such a wealth of knowledge here that it blows my mind. There's so much more than just poultry talk, too. There are many here who also appreciate a self sustaining lifestyle. When you have time, enjoy just looking around. Oh, and don't forget about the search feature! Its rarely that I think of something that hasn't already been discussed in some fashion.

My advise to someone thinking chickens is learn as much as you can before deciding on what breed to get. After you've narrowed down some choices, work on getting a coop and run so it will be ready BEFORE you get the chicks.

You'll need to figure out if its the eggs that's the reason you're thinking chickens or if its the idea of having chickens that sounds fun. If its that you want eggs that you know what's in them (or not in them), then I also suggest the large fowl. If the ideas of chickens is charming but the eggs are secondary, then maybe the banties aren't such a bad idea.

One thing to take into consideration is your climate. Also if you can have a rooster. Roosters are loud and not allowed in every situation. Roosters are also good for warmth. If you can't have a rooster then consider getting chickens that are hardy in cold climates seeing you won't be having very many (I'm thinking combined body heat). If you intend on having a heated coop you'll have a little leeway.

I wish you the very best in your chicken adventures! I know for myself that chickens are so much more enjoyable than I ever could have imagined.
