Thinking about starting a commercial broiler operation

What kind of shipping costs would be involved with buying from a US hatchery and having them sent to Haiti? Would there be import/custom fees? Sometimes moving live animals across borders is not a simple matter (from a red tape standpoint).

Yes, custom fees once in Haiti will be applied. So I need to worry about getting the chicks there (next day air?) and then getting them out of Haitian customs.

We have shipped finches from the US to the Virgin Islands. There is some work that had to be done on both ends. From the US side you have to get a vet health inspection, certificate, a bill of laden accounting for all of the finches in the shipment. From the Virgin Islands side the recipient has to get an import permit, pay import fees upon arrival, and be at the cargo facility upon landing or risk the shipment being destroyed by local authorities thinking the shipment is abandoned.

I would contact Hatian officials and see what their requirements are for importation. Their regulations will likely differ, since they are a different country and your looking at poultry.

Another way around the importation of live animals you may be able to import fertile eggs for incubation instead and ultimately achieve your goal. This may also work for long term operation of raising meat birds until you could get your flock breeding for you.

Chek out the import FEES and TAXES... I hear that some of these island countrees charge 40+/- %.

I would look into shipping eggs in and hatching your own meat birds before buying chicks. Sad to say that people in the states have many resources for chicks and still can't find / breed the kind of bird your wanting. It's tough but it's reality as well. But in the long run I would look into getting eggs not chicks as customs will be more likely to let the eggs go without much of a hassle / fees than chicks.

Here in the state, the commercial broiler operation. Supply the chicks,and the feed to the farmer who raise them for a fee.

You may find some that would work with you.

Think they pay base on feed cost to lbs of chicken.

They supply chicks,feed, even labor to load and cost to truck them.

Thanks to all of you for the insight and ideas. Hatching eggs are so much more expensive though. When I look at Hatcheries, 3 eggs cost like 10-15 dollars... Maybe I am looking at the wrong places but from what I have seen, the hatching eggs are far more expensive than the chicks; not sure why though... Am I looking at the wrong places?

Contact the big breeders as far as Avigen.... or Hubbard... I think you have to buy about 30 cases to make it worth their while but it's about a nickle an egg from what I was told.
