I have had chickens before but they were already established on a farm I managed. I am on my own now in the bush of Alaska. I have weather and predators to be concerned with. Looking to build my coop off my green house and need some design ideas that will work best. What is a good number to start with and what breed? I will be doing my research on this sight and any ideas would be much appreciated .

One of the best BYC members @Alaskan , lives out your way. Keep us posted on your progress. What size coop are you thinking on building? That would help determine the number of chickens you will want to start with.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. I always order pullets (a minimum of 25 as more chicks ship better) even if I don't need that many. Since I have the order form to prove that I ordered pullets, I've never had any trouble selling off the extra chicks and recouping my money. Alaska Backyard Chickens has a list of recommended breeds for Alaska at http://akchickens.org/getting-started/recommended-breeds/. I have some friends in Alaska who raise both Black Sex Links (Black Stars) and Black Australorps, and both of them do great in the cold winters there. The Black Sex Links in particular are egg laying machines, churning out large, brown eggs right through the very coldest winter weather. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Whatever breeds you decide to get, good luck with your flock.

Some folks allow the chickens to free range inside their greenhouses in winter - so they have some protection from the elements. I don't know if that would work out for you.

Thanks for the input. I was thinking a 20' x 10' run and a raised shelter with the box for laying. Want a coop that is user friendly in all aspects. Want to keep clean for the birds health. I am sure someone has thought of that! Please send any plans that may work, would be very much appreciated.
