Thinking about starting with 6 chicks

Hi from Athens Ohio! Look at all the good advise you have already got, and this is your first day.

from Ohio!
I think linoleum would be a great addition, but other than that it sounds like a great set-up. Definitely close it up at night-raccoons, especially, are very crafty.

Hi,
I am from central WI. Owning chickens is such fun!! I converted an old Milk house into a coop. It has a wood floor, and I use deep shavings, which work great! I also have a fenced in run, but I do let them out to free range during the day. They have been OK so far and love to eat bugs and such. But you will want to secure them in at night, have a roost for them and they will come in on their own before dusk, (but leave them penned in the coop and run for a couple of weeks when you first move them in there so they know where "home" is.) Never had a problem, and they are flock animals so do tend to stay together.
You will love owning them!! Fresh eggs!!

Wood floor is fine linoleum will trap moisture under it and rot the wood.
yes screen the window

I always close mine in at night some people don't

chicks in the garage brooder sounds perfect

Sounds like you got it all under control perfectly

So glad you joined the BYC

Welcome!

The only thing is, hardware loth, well, secured, is stronger than chicken wire or window screen. Raccoons will go right through chicken wire or screen. Secure the hardware cloth with crews an washers to hold it securely.
