Thinking cockerel, hoping not.

Sooo, she said, wanting to find an excuse to keep this young chap... do you think two cockerels to 12 hens one cockerel too many? =)
Yes... I often keep boys anyways

I have two cockerels and 5 hens, and they are fine.. I keep them separate at night, and I am with them all day and there is no over-mating, maybe I am just lucky.. But you should be fine. Just can you keep the cockerels maybe in a separate coop? It will be "safer" for the hens. C:

Pierre keeps them in order at the moment. Yes, I think I will see how it all turns out and not take possibly lethal action until/unless absolutely necessary. We've not had roosters in the gardens up to now, and I hope the nearby residents will be tolerant (they are in an agricultural field so could keep anyway, but it is nice to keep peace with the neighbours and consider their well being too!)

Does anyone have a take on Pierre's mix? He has so much presence for a young cockerel (hatched July 12th).

Thanks for the feedback, don't currently have the facilities for separation - but never say never... hope I'll be lucky too!

The feathered legs and fluff make me wonder if he has some cochin in him. Another guess would be Marans mixed with Orpington.

I think you'd be fine with that many birds. However, it depends on the rooster. Some are harder on the hens than others.

Might have some Cochin or Brahma in him. Very pretty bird!

You usually want to have about 1 rooster to every 10 hens, unless you are pair or trio breeding. Otherwise the hens can become rather beat up and overmated. But some roosters are gentler than others; as long as the two cockerels get along and the hens don't seem too damaged, 2:12 would probably be fine.
