We're hopefully moving out of town in the next couple of months and into the country, where I'll be able to legally have more birds. We now have 4 BO and 4 BR pullets that are 5 wks. I'd like to add at least 4 and maybe 8 more to our flock. Things I'm looking for are consistent egg production, big eggs, big birds, friendly disposition and good w/ kids (since we have an 8 month old that will be wandering amongst them before long), and a "standard" breed, i.e. not interested in anything exotic. Does anyone have any suggestions for birds I should look at?

RIRs are always good for egg production. EEs are great too and will add color to your flock and egg basket...and they're very good natured.

Delawares!!! They are excellent dual purpose birds and have really friendly dispositions, especially if you get them from a breeder. I have several that hop in my lap - check the Delaware thread out in this section-lots of good stories and pictures.

We have BR and BOrps too. Our EE are nice and we get blue eggs, I really want some Speckled Sussex. Big pretty and good layers. I ordered some SLW too. I think they are so pretty and they are supposed to be good layers, but not real sure on temperment. I guess I will find out.

I would not suggest RIR with such a little one. Great layers but not all of them are nice.

Marans, they lay dark brown colored eggs that are large-jumbo sized. they are also calm and friendly birds. I would also recomend Easter Eggers, they tend to be quite friendly not to mention their beautiful eggs.

Thanks for the suggestions folks. I was thinking of Delawares, so maybe I'll go that route.
