Just to be fair, I'm a hard-core organic supporter and an anti-vegan (not the people, just the philosophy) not because I think it tastes better or any of that crap, but because I care about not putting a bunch of extra chemicals (herbicides/pesticides) onto land or in my body for that matter when responsible farm management (animal integration, multi-crop and crop rotation) could take care of most of the issues that the herbicides/pesticides/chemical fertilizer/antibiotics are used for in giant monocrop farms and feed lots. I think it's healthier for the land (and water) and the creatures that live on it.
Also because I don't want to support genetically modified crops and the companies that own them-- I don't think a company should be able to own and patent any form of life.
Sorry for the semi-off-topic diversion there...
If your pastor's doc was probably refering only to added hormones, than conventional feed would be okay for this. If he's concerned about added chemicals then you would want to go organic. I'm new to meat birds but I have been researching the costs to raise organic broilers... If you do Cornish X, it will end up costing you around $13 per bird according to my math and current feed costs in my area, if you can get organic feed in bulk (which you probably could considering you'd need around 1000 lbs of feed to raise 50 birds according to my math) then your costs could be reduced. If they're free ranging then your costs could be reduced a little more. 1/2 acre is way more than enough room to raise 50 birds.
