I'm considering using artificial lighting to keep my hens laying through the winter months. What wattage bulbs should I use? I was thinking of a timer and 60 watt bulbs. Another concern I have is whether or not the additional hours of light will cause them to molt again sooner than they would naturally? And are chicks hatched in the winter often weaker than those hatched in spring and summer? I suspect that living in northern Florida, that the temperature should be mild enough through the winter to have a good survival rate.
