Ducks are clumsy. They trip, they fall into holes. The ducklings trip over their own feet. When they get turned turtle, they can get back up, but they will thrash around. They all do it.

If you are worried about niacin deficiency, make sure they are getting niacin. Easy solution to that one.

By the way, show quality runners tip over backwards frequently when they are young, if that is what you happen to have.

My ducks have a safe area to roam, but they are also locked up at night. They have a secure coop with a very secure night run , all welded steel mesh, including the top, and wire skirting. So, they don't have to be inside at night, but their night housing is even more secure. No ducky snacks for the local Great Horned Owl.

I have to herd mine in at night. I feed them at night, so they want to go in, but the geese like the duck pen, so the ducks are afraid to put themselves away until I come and get them and escort them safely past the geese.
