Hello, and welcome to BYC. Keep an eye on the rooster. Aggression sometimes starts with side stepping, pecking at the ground and 'eyeballing'. I would never allow the child to be alone with him. Good luck.

You have been given a lot of good advice. Most males are good. Out of the hundreds I have hatched out I only had a couple that were kind of aggressive. I am a breeder and hatch out a few hundred chicks every year of which around half will be males. I love my males. Good luck with your birds and have fun...

Wow! Thank you all for the advice!!! So we will keep a close eye and let our little guy know not to venture into the coop alone. We also found out the rooster is technically not allowed within city limits--no one has complained yet but we are looking for a new home since we are so new to all of this! Thanks for the great advice on egg laying as well. We are only getting 8 and a half hours of daylight currently so that makes sense.
