It caught up with us. I lost my buff orpington this morning. I let the girls out of the coop into their run as usual, then went back a few hours later to offer them a bunch of bugs I'd collected from the garden. Augusta was laying down, which I didn't think much of immediately because she does love her dust baths. When she didn't respond to my presence, I knew something was wrong. As near as I can figure, she was looking for a way to cool off, dug a hole on the shady and damp side of the run, and somehow got her head trapped under a part of the frame.
What a terrible and freak accident, and to an extra special, sweet heart of a hen.
