I have a black and white Easter egger pullet between 6 and 7 weeks old. She is at the the top of the pecking order and has always had the most personality of the bunch. Well recently, every time I walk into the brooder room, (on a side note this weekend they are out of there!) she does a flying leap and lands on my shoulder. Then when I try to pick her up to put her down she avoids my hands at all costs, making getting her down a 5 min. ordeal. I am flattered that she likes me so much but she's not little, and neither are her claws. She seriously thinks she is a pet falcon or something. If it was up to here she would always perch on my shoulder.
When she was little she would hop into my hand when I went to grab the feeder out of the brooder. I guess she took it to the next level.
Do any of you have chickens that do this?

As my babies matured, every time I opened up the brooder lid, they ALL jumped out and either got on my arms or on the edge of the brooder! They get to the age where they are ready to get out and explore the world. And you are safety to them. So they hop on you to have a look see before they actually take the plunge and out into the big world.

haha how funny... I just named a little back chick Parrot just because of that...silly little birds ;)

Yep! I've got two (a DOM and a BR; must be a black/white thing!) who have done this since they were chickens. They're almost a year old now. The DOM isn't TOO bad, but the BR is a big girl. Both can inflict quite the scratching, but will readily get on your hand and sit on your arms, too. If you pull out the meal worms, you will have a arm load of EE, too.

Anyway, as they grow and put on weight, their flying capacity will diminish considerably. While our girls can and do still make a leap for a shoulder, they don't do it nearly as often as they used to. They also tend to visibly "wind up" (like a cat stalking something) before jumping, so you can see it coming and either pick them up or get out of the way.

So yeah, it's not abnormal behavior if they really trust you and want to follow their instincts in reaching the highest perch possible now and again.

Haha chickens have so much more personality than I expected. She is in the coop now for a full week, but the day before I put her in there she flew at my face as soon as I opened the door to the brooder room. I caught her luckily, but she just wanted to be held and coo at me. Every time I open the coop door to check on her she runs over and cocks her head to one side like she is contemplating the best way to jump on me. :P

Both my Lav Orps will jump onto my back, they are 8 months old and heavy girls. One of them has flown up to my shoulder while I was standing up right! So I don't know about the behavior changing as they get larger or older. I also have a year old Splash Sumatra who acts like she doesn't want us to touch her (she'll bite and TWIST the skin pinched in her beak) but then she "surfs the humans" quite often. I didn't know if it was a dominance thing or she's passive aggressive-nutso-crazy in the head and really does want to be with us. Either way, aside from claw marks on your back and chicken feet getting tangled in your hair...it makes me feel special when they jump on board.

Its great to be loved unless you are in a hurry ! With me its one of my ducks .. I just accidentally hurt him a little today stumbeling over him, he will be fine but even though he has a mate he can not get close enough to me when I am in view.
