I have a rhoad island red that started laying eggs a few weeks ago. The eggs where rather small but the shells where hard as concrete! The day she layed her first egg I switched her to an egg layers feed and I've been adding oyster shell to it. They also get to pick apart the apples that have fallen from the tree and get their share of grass and rose bushes. As well as the bugs they find. And get a special treat of chopped cabbage at bed time. But the feed and oyster shell they have access to 24/7. And the hens eat it all up! This hen has for the last three or for days now gone from laying every other day to laying every 12 hours. The eggs are now, not just small but crumble when you touch them. They are no longer hard as concrete. I know she shouldn't be laying twice per day. She is only 6 months old. What should I do?? The other hens are doing justfine.
