This is an egg with a tail......very weird!! ***PIC***

I agree with the posts that it is likely due to her being new to laying. Mine did that too. It seems that after a few eggs, their system figures it all out and it is smooth sailing. The only extra calcium I give my girls other than their food is crushed egg shells and they do great. People talk about how hard it is to peel hard boiled eggs when they are fresh but our girls' shells are so thick, they peel easily. Give it a few days and I bet it will be fine.

I don't know if chickens are the same as people, but I do know with humans, if your vitamin D levels are low, it can interfere with calcium absorption. So even if you're getting calcium into your body, you're not absorbing very much into your cells. If chickens' bodies work similarly, and if you truly haven't had much sunlight, I would definitely try some D3 for a week or so, but no longer. Because, at least in human bodies, too much vitamin D can cause too much calcium absorption, which another poster said can cause kidney damage.

My girls were out all day yesterday. It was sunny. I think they get enough sun on rainy days. We have a great bog south facing window in the coop, its a 3'0" 4'0". Sunlight is usually coming in. Its been rainy but warm here, Ive had the coop closed though because we get a wind that blows the rain into the coop. I have to wait till its sunny to fix it so the door wont let the weather in.

Im going to town here soon, so Ill get the vitamins asap. I have a vitamin boost powder for my chicks, I wonder if it would do for my adult birds? I also have stress aid. Do hens get stressed when they first start laying?

They don't get too stressed by laying the first egg. Since she laid a few now she should be getting used to it. By the way horns are a protein, keratin (think I have the right one) like finger nails.
