This is confusing....

All right. So, I've heard that chicks get starter, switching over to grower if needed, until the first egg. Okay, does this mean that if one hen from my group of young chickens lays an egg, I switch them all over immediately to the layer feed? Or just that individual hen? Just want to make sure I understand this correctly

You can also put out some oyster shell for them, while you are waiting to use up the rest of your started/grower. They'll eat oyster shell, if they need it.
 
When I got my first egg last year, I switched all three of my pullets to layer feed. Seemed to work for me...they were all 18-20 weeks old then...seemed to work out. I don't know how it works if you have pullets a few months apart in the same flock.
