This is kinda strange...............

I have a black cochin chick that stays with her brothers and sisters(17 others) and this morning I walked out to the coop and she was laying on her side in their house. I went ahead and dug a hole for her cause I knew she was dead. When I went to put her in the hole she started PEEPING!!!! I brought her in the house and she didn't look good at all, I dipped her beak in some water and she drank a little. I mixed up some oatmeal and yogurt but she just sat there sleeping. Well now she is SCARFING down her oatmeal and she pooped once. My poodle is guarding her from my american bulldog, I guess he thinks its his chick now. (By the way the chicks are almost 12 weeks old) She also has a funny odor to her, what could be wrong?

What kind of funny smell? Have you checked her for infected injuries?

She doesn't have an injury, but I can't really explain the smell. It doesn't really smell bad but it doesn't smell good either. My poodle seems to enjoy keeping her awake, every time he thinks shes been asleep too long he'll wake her up. I like that hes doing that cause it keeps her moving her head.

I had a rooster that went that way...I thought he was dead too, got out the shovel and dug the hole. Went back to scoop him up and give him last rites and sure enough, he hopped up and stood there. He had several episodes of acting dead. Several times he was completely on his back with his feet in the air!
He had been acting ill and I thought he was going to die naturally anyway.... I still haven't figured out what caused it.
He is alive and well now after dosing him with tetramycine(sp) for a few days and hand feeding him til he could swallow properly. It took several weeks until he returned back to normal.
Today he is completely normal and a lot more tamer than he was before.
I'm thinking mild strokes was the cause and then it got worse with the inablility to feed himself properly. Possibly a virus too....

Like others, I'm unable to afford a trip to the vets so self medicating was my only option.
I hope your chicken is feeling better soon and keep up the nutrition! (as for the smell, I figure they all smell in a closed invironment other than their coop)

Does she smell all over or just is certain places?
If she stinks around her mouth, she might have sour crop.
If she stinks around her bum, then she might has ploop stuck to her feathers.

I had a 3 day old chick do the same thing, she was always sort of weak and one day I woke up to find her dead so I had my dad put her in a little box in the trash and when I went to throw some old shavings in the can I hear peeping! I named her Hope because of her being such a little miracle baby, unfortunately she didn't make it through the next night

might just have been the cold and dehydration.
...keep it warm (so inside in a temp stable environment) and hydrated (you may need to keep dipping its beak in the waterer every hour... (add electrolytes.vit or even pedialyte in a pinch to the waterer).... and moisten the feed it eats.
I would keep your dog away... it may not intend to hurt the chick but can unintentionally injure (think internal)

Actually, my chick loves my dog. (Courage is the dog's name) Courage will go up to the little box and nudge the chick to try and get her to go outside with him. The chick enjoys his company AND keeps the 100lb bulldog away.(courage only weighs 8.5lbs.) As long as he doesn't hurt the chick then I'll not separate them.

The chick is doing MUCH better so I might be able to put her out tomorrow or something.
