I am new to raising chickens and so far, I love it.
I have 10 pullets who have so many different personalities. That surprised me actually.
I have 2 Rhode Island Reds, 2 Barred Rocks, 2 Pearl White Leghorns, 2 White Crested Black Polish, an Ameraucana and a Buff Brahma.
My husband has had to build a separate “apartment” in the coop and a separate run, for the Polish pullets because the other chicks will pick and pull out their long “hair”. The Polish chicks are a very nervous breed because the feathers that grow over their eyes causes vision impairment. They are better adjusted to the coop this way.
I got enough chicks that each of my six grandkids got to pick his or her own chick and name it. Their are a couple of really interesting names. Ha!Ha!
Raising chickens has given me a good project to do that also helps me get exercise as well. I have cerebral palsy on one side of my body. This is a very good way for me to stay active and feel productive and accomplished. I actually didn’t expect to fall in love with my chickens, LOL!
The chicks were actually a Christmas gift from my brother, who started raising his own last year and fell in love with it. He just knew that I would too! I got them in May of this year.
My husband has been so supportive of this whole adventure by putting up with having baby chicks in our bathroom and also our bedroom! He also built them a coop like Fort Knox. He said no predator will ever get in there! Even though my adult son is happy I am excited about my chickens, he acts a little jealous because I am so active with the chicks, I haven’t been able to do a whole lot of things like stay at their house for a couple of days like I used to. I think he might change his mind when he starts getting free eggs whenever he visits me. PLUS, my grandkids want to visit us all the time now!!
