This is supposed to be a BCM....Can anyone tell me?

I recently purchased some BCM's from a local breeder. All are very nice looking chicks. However, this one is different. It has brownish red coloring and is the smallest of the group. Can someone tell me about this unusual coloring? She is very cute and I plan to keep her regardless of her color. She was black looking when I got her a couple of weeks ago as a cute little fuzz ball.

but i will defo say it looks completely different to mine

and i have a 3 week old and a 5 weeks old

they will be my breeding pair

although your chick has the distinct feathery feet

It's siblings look like this. They do have feathery feet, and the shells that came with all my chicks are a dark chocolate brown color.

I really don't know... The pictures I've seen before haven't had feathered legs.. :/

How interesting. Don't all Marans have feathered legs with the outside toes being feathered too?

I love the different chick! You took such nice photos too. I don't have experience with BCM so I can't venture a guess as to why her coloring is not the same as the others.

The original Marans have feathered legs but this has been bred out by many UK breeders.

That's probably why I have only noticed seeing pictures without the feathered legs I really can't say if they are or not. I don't see a lot of pictures of them either way. Hope someone can chime in and solve your mystery!

I think it is all about genetics. If it helps, this run on Marans are from the Cottage Hill line. That is about all I know. I have been reading up on them as much as possible, and I think this is some coloring that is considered undesirable. If you ask me, she is cute as a button and has a wonderful personality. It has won me and my hubby over in a big way. She is soooo very spunky for a runt!
One of the other things I found out is that the daddy is a HUGE BCM Roo and I looked at him yesterday. There are BCM hens in the same pen as well as a couple of Americauna's. I purchased two Olive eggers from the breeder too, which came from the same daddy. The hens in that pen were both totally black as well as black with the copper around the neck. They were very beautiful birds.

I have a bcm pullet that had a lot of red like that when she was that age. Now it's only on her wings, and she is getting blacker and blacker in the body. Still not sure if she's going to have proper coloring as an adult, but hth!
