This is what a raccoon can do to wire

REALLY??!!!?? I am [kind of] surprised to hear that. Have you recently lost some to predators?

Not recently but I have. I dealt with it. It just seems there are so many posts of sickness and predators that it seems to common.

Just try to remember that for every post about a problem, there are 20 or more with a solution or a joyful part of raising chickens. The bad things, being the exceptions, just seem more memorable. It scares me when I hear about car accidents too, but I still drive everyday, and my car cost a lot more than my coop! ( and hopefully I'm worth more than a few chckens

Hmmm...I am now thinking of building a concrete coop with structural steel supports and surrounding it with a moat...like Alcatraz for chickens

Sheesh! That was one strong raccoon.

Hi

New to the site - but wanted to add a tidbit - we are first time chicken owners since May 1 - we got 3 chicks and 3 mallard chicks from TSC. Since that time, we have had a tradgedy - we lock our chickens and our ducks (much to the ducks dismay) up at night. One night we lost one of our hens from a raccoon that had torn away the side of the coop. It pulled the wood off of the screws and pulled the poor hen half way through. Since it couldn't get her the whole way out - it became a very gruesome sight.

We are in the process of building a new coop for the 2 that we have from that first group and the 7 more we got first of July.

I do have a question though, and this might not be the thread for it, but I'll give it a shot....Will electric fencing hurt my chickens? The new coop we are building will be kinda close to the electric fence that we have installed in the backyard, and I'm worried that if someone breaks "free" from the coop (I like to let them kinda sorta free range during the day - cause they always stick close and we keep a close watch on them and they always have come home) and I don't want to injure or kill one if they get zapped on the fence.

Well, maybe you did have raccoonzilla in there jupitergirl. Those are amazing pictures. Were there any cross-bars around the middle of the cage like on the two ends?

Please don't take me wrong. You've shown a lot of people how easy coonzilla could easily get into their pens if it wanted to.

But I'll tell you this.....Your picture is worth more than a thousand words...Gives me alot to think about.

Thanks for the pictures.
