I usually take a short walk in the mornings, and here in the Virgin Islands, it’s totally normal to see dozens of chickens within half a mile. Even strolling through restaurants like they own the place...

But there’s this one rooster—he’s got an attitude and keeps ruining my 1/4 mile walk. He doesn’t charge, but he walks straight toward me, calm and confident, and I’m not trying to take any chances. I’ve got medical issues and can’t really defend myself if he decides to get bold.

I'm learning, and so curious about breeds/mixes, etc.

Just curious—since you all know so much—any idea what kind of mix he might be?

This definitely isn’t the ‘food?’ walk—I know he’s attacked a few tourists before. It’s all a bit mixed here. We have entire flocks of Orpingtons, plymouth rocks- and my favorite the group of silkies at the supermaarket. haha

Yes, there are game fowl, but like me, people sometimes release ridiculously cool breeds into the area and everything goes in the blender.

I was just hoping for some input—what might cause a belly like that? Or the cream/white coloring on the saddle? Oviously the possibilities are endless. I am just hoping to be more in-tune.

The belly is colored like a silver spangled Hamburg, but those have rose combs and are white skinned, both dominant traits that this rooster doesn't have. So I kind of doubt it has any Hamburg in him.

When different color patterns get mixed up, you can get anything.

He also has abnormally long saddle feathers, and that could mean some Asiatic long tailed breed is mixed in, which I think is more likely than Hamburg.

If you fear he will attack you, bring something to fend him off with. Tennis rackets work well.

Good info!

Oh yeah... like I can find a tennis racket here. HAHA. I can find a stick and hubby can put a palm leaf on the end- but I cant lose my balance or twist. I'm going to bring a blowhorn from the boat.

Try a small squirt gun with lemon juice, or bring him a treat to keep him busy. Or...bring the kind of net with a handle fishermen use to scoop fish up into their boat caught with a rod and reel. I bet he'd be delicious, coq au vin in a slow cooker.
