Hello My Positive Peeps,

I have been thinking a lot about roosters lately. You see I ordered straight run chicks last week. And you know the hatcheries have minimums for breed A N D quantity. Soooo, I have 10 chicks coming for which I have no clue what they'll send. Now, I have this way of underestimating things I like/want/are interested in. Having said that my plan as far as roos go would be to let them be themselves and IF for some weird reason I could not/can not handle the crowing I would simply employ the collar that I recently learned about. I read the reviews and it seems humane, works. What am I missing?

With 30 girls (eventually) I figure I should always have at least two roos anyway. But with the collar, I figure I can have as many as I want.

Signed,

She who has nothing against the roo :D

I wouldn't use a collar. There's been times where they've actually killed the birds.

Crowing is something you get used to over time.
We had chickens a decade or so ago while living in FL. I don't recall it bothering me really. Someone down the street must have had a rooster farm. They would get to going, I called them "The Bubble Bunch". Never saw them. And they did not bother me either. After all, we all were living in the country.

Really, I do not anticipate drama. With exception of deciding which get to stay for the long haul. I have been told to keep in mind the characteristics of roo is important as far as breeding. We def want chicks for eggs so I guess the person was wanting me to understand (we were discussing one of my fave breeds the Brahma) them being slow to mature, any roos I allowed to mate that characteristic will affect egg laying.
