This snake is DOOMED! Update - got one!

Yes, we're thinking there were two snakes, because we lost chicks two nights running. Of course, this one was sunning in the pen like he was digesting breakfast and waiting for lunch. He had three chicks inside him - so those were good eggs, too

Anyway, now we're covered in purple from doctoring hens last night, and smell like dead skunk from the snake. Anybody want a romantic country life, cheap?

Snake traps formed by deer netting are very effective. That is what I have caught every one with that comes around the coop/run. There are other threads that show how to use it. Very cheap, goes in place fast. I roll the netting into a loose roll and place it along the base of the coop on the outside. The snakes must cross it to get in. They don't get across.

ETA - Before I placed it on the ground, the netting I used at the rafters to keep the girls from going up there to roost, caught the first snake. Then I went proactive and set to trap them before reaching the door.

You fasten the minnow trap on the floor, against a wall. The snake crawls in and can't figure how to get out. It works if the snake can fit into a 1" hole! For the big ones, it would have to be deer netting, if it's someplace the chicks won't get trapped.
