... buy hatchery chicks or from non-NPIP breeders. Who is with me?

(Not intended as a debate about the quality or benefits of buying from hatcheries vs. breeders, nor a debate about the suckiness of NPIP.)

Sometimes I can't resist. breeders can sometimes over charge for the price. Some breeds I want show some I just want to say i owned them. So thats where I will go to a hatchery and get different breeds for not much a price. Npip.... I'm still trying to figure out the dang paperwork!

I would go both ways so I dont vote. Some of the BEST non NPIP breeders are the old time breeders having the best flock possible. I hate NAIS and not yet NPIP, probably won't. NPIP is sort of a false security for me so I won't discuss in length on this thread. Yes all of my birds came from NPIP breeders but does it help me, no. I have several non NPIP breeders out of state that I would definately buy from which their stock is certified by vet as pullorum and thypoid free. Now tests for MG may be required as well. If I want some of the "classic" or "older bloodlines that the older stock came from, I would buy it from them, eggs or chicks.

I would buy from hatcheries that are certified because of vast locations of breeders so that is why it is useful for a large hatching businesses taking the time to certify all of their breeder's flock. I'd prefer Ideal Hatchery because all of their chickens are under one location, not a breeder here and there in some hatcheries like McMurray, etc. which it would take them some time to figure out where the disease came from and be able to track down several locations.

I'm thinking about NPIP... do you guys ever get them coming on your farm unanounced? Or do they call and let you know they're coming out to inspect?
I have 15 production reds and 10 BSL coming from a hatchery so I guess I'm buying from a hatchery... sorry

my BLRW are only from good breeders though.

From what i am learning on here..NPIP does not really give you the disease security that most folks thinks that it does..
Is that correct or not?

I don't buy from hatcheries; there are too many people around here selling chicks. I don't know if the last one I bought from was NPIP, but the one before that was. I'm pretty well set for now & hope not to have to BUY any more. Still waiting on a broody hen so I can hatch my own!
