Thistle as feed

I was recently given some thistle seed by a lady moving into a condo that doesn't allow bird feeders. Can I feed this to my chickens? Should I spread it on the ground or mix it with feed??

For Niger Thistle? http://www.feedipedia.org/node/41 Feedipedia link says "Poultry: Up to 30% oil meal has been used successfully in rations for layers." Mine eat it off the ground if the finches spill it.
