OK - sounds like you're starting under the foot, you'll increase like this a few rows (by doing the few sc into the end stitch on both ends)
Once the underside is done, you'll do a few rounds one stitch in one stitch.
It might get tricky, but keep trying, and its not much to pull out and start over.
