I got into chickens slightly before the curve. I always wanted one since I saw the 1930's something pic of my dad with his pet chicken. My first set of chickens were raised 2016 and moved into a flock on a farm I moved to a few months later. My chicks (by then hens) had by that time become alpha females and would steer a free-range group of a dozen or so chickens onto our space somehow knowing we had treats...

I now have a BO hen and 2 BO chicks (I used to have 2 BO hens but one died plus chicken math). I keep with BO's since I am alllowed to free range my chix as long as they are friendly. My otherwise taciturn BO hen will squat and let children pick her up (I wish she was so accommodating to me) and I am sure this is why everyone tolerates my bunch of freeloaders.

And the eggs...my girl went into serious molt between the 18 months thing and losing her bestie. Ms. Clockwork hasn't since Oct. and I had to buy commercial eggs for the first time in 2 years. OMG. I just want the ones from under my Prunilla, thx.

There are more stories to tell and I am glad to be with other chicken people who will understand. I am in NW Washington and looking for chicken peeps and clubs around here.
Cheers...

Welcome to BYC. I want to say, we love pictures so please show off your girls and set up.
I think it's fair to say it's cold up there! As I'm in rainy, but sunny Florida.
Hope your coop is preditor proofed and toasty for your winter adventures.
We are Egg- cited you joined BYC. My crystal ball reports good news to you.. lol
As the season changes, more eggs are in your future. Lol.

I will send some pics as soon as weather permits. I am lucky here. I am enveloped by so many farms and fences that the only predator I fear is Eagles and so far, they aren't looking here because it is too easy to grab ducks in the nearby pond.... and you aren't likely to encounter the crazy lady while doing so.
We are good, hunkered down from the rain and will give updates on our lovely space.

Cheers to FL, u lucky warm bunch
