Thought it was poop, but.....

I have a week and a half old chick that was hatched In our classroom. This morning I was checking them over and one looked like it had poop stuck to its fluff near the vent. So I grabbed a warm damp paper towel and gently removed it. Underneath was blood, like I picked a scab. Does anyone know what this is and if it will heal ok?

Was that the umbilicus or navel? Perhaps you removed the scab and it bled. I would apply some alcohol or iodine, so that it will dry up.

My guess is that it wasn’t poop you rubbed off, but what was left of the umbilical cord that dried up. I would put a dab of plain original neosporin on it and leave it be.
