Myrtle lost her eye to infection as a tiny chick. We've been having non-stop storms these past couple of weeks, and she got her floofy head a lil wet. I was drying her off (and giving her a *much-needed* beak trim) this afternoon when I noticed that her eye socket has gotten a lil crusty. I'll call the vet tomorrow, but was wondering if anyone has thoughts about it. Is this a developing bacterial or fungal infection, maybe?

I wouldn't do anything let her body do it's thing. I wouldn't put anything on it either as to let it air out and not trap stuff in it. That's just me. I think one should let the body do its thing

Makes sense. I'm inclined to agree, but this one eyed chicken thing is new to me. Her eye is (or was) still in there. It just kind of disappeared after the infection healed. The eye disappeared about 5 months ago. This crusty stuff is new.

I have a chicken with recurring eye issues. She still has an eyeball but it was damaged during her hatch or shortly after . it gets crusty occasionally-especially if I've let the coop cleaning lapse too long-and a couple days of rinsing with saline and putting some terramycin clears it right up. She has been fine since I rehomed her beautiful sister for picking on her so maybe that was the problem all along. But I agree that a saline flush is likely all thats in order. If that doesn't do the trick try the terramycin

Will do. Thanks! Nice to know it isn't anything super serious. I'll keep better tabs on it. I keep her coop super clean because her sister sleeps on the floor. But it may be the nasty wet weather we've been having. She's not experienced this before, so it may just be her reaction to it.
