Thoughts on Eglu coops

I love mine. Perfect size for my 4 girls and so easy to clean. I just move it when I want to clean the run. Expensive, but I have no regrets getting it. It was much roomier than I had thought and if you get one, be sure to keep a You Tube assembly video together to make it easier. I have the green cube with a 3 meter run.

Has it been thru a winter yet?

Are Eglu coops really safe? I would be concerned about a plastic coop. Of course, since a mink attack last winter, I would put bullet-proof panels on all my coops if I could. There is no longer any chicken wire; everything has hardware cloth on, under, over and around. Eglu coops just look vulnerable, to me.

We are about 2 months into winter here in Minnesota, and it has been unusually cold early in the season. Disclaimer - I did get the extreme temperature jacket for the Cube, as well as the weather tarp for the run. My hens are doing great, and I put their non-heated water in the nesting box on one very cold and lazy night. It did not freeze over, with temperatures hovering around zero (I don't do this normally as I do not want to add moisture to the coop, but it was an interesting finding that morning).

We had some -30F days (before windchill!) and the girls are doing great. 2 of them (my Easter Egger and RI Red) are laying pretty much every day with no added light or heat, and spend the day in the run. On the 2 coldest days I did put in the panel heater and a closed gallon jug of hot water. On the coldest day, my 2 girls who are laying both laid huge eggs that had double yolks in each!
