I have to soundproof my coop but I'm concerned it will end up too dark so I'm wondering if covering the windows with double layers of a heavy clear acrylic sheet (one inside one outside so there is an air pocket between) will give me the same sound reduction as just putting cladding over the openings?

Hubby says it won't do anything but I'm not convinced as wouldn't that make it a bit like double glazing and they use that to reduce noise near roads.

I vote that it won't do anything. They have to have airflow also or it will make them ill. There will always be some noise involved with hens as they sing the egg song. If you have insulated the coop, I wouldn't worry- just insulate what you can. But the windows have to have the air coming in.

Oh- and if you are trying to keep the rooster quiet, you can put curtains over the windows to slow down his realization that it is morning.

Yeah its because of a rooster and he is crowing at 4.30am in pitch black now we have just come out of daylight savings, so curtains aint going to help Im afraid dark doesnt actually stop roosters crowing. Know this from experience as I nearly strangled one at a Bed and Breakfast we stayed at once who crowed all **** night long LOL.

The airflow concerns me too but at the moment all the windows face the complaining neighbour. I plan to make air vents on the opposite side of the coop to them so there is still air circulation which of course will let some noise out but at least it wont be all directed directly at their house.

I dont have to reduce it a hell of a lot as he doesnt wake us and we are actually closer than they are so either they are just super light sleepers or complainers (suspect the second) I just need to reduce it enough they drop their complaint.

My worry is that by cladding the whole thing I will turn it into a really dark damp box of a coop.

Oh and I really dont want to have to go and lock him up in a box every night for the next how ever many years. We will look at rehoming before doing that to preempt that suggestion :-)

Oh and no the coop isnt insulated, we dont have low winter temperatures where I am so there hasnt been a need.
