Thoughts on what day and air cell? *Pics*

Went out to check this morning and it had externally pipped. As of right now it has about a quarter inch zip and is chirping away. About how long does it typically take before I should intervene? I know it can take a while but I just want to know for future reference.

Some people do intervene by making a tiny pinprick in the fat part of the eggshell where the air vent is if they have internally piped but not externally. If it has a quarter zip already just keep checking on it. Intervening before it has absorbed the blood and yoke usually ends up a dead chick. You have to be careful and make sure it has done this first before breaking any of the shell and membrane from the zip area. Some take a long time while others take 30 min. The main thing is to give it time to do it naturally for the best survival rate.

If it's zipping, it's highly unlikely that you'll need to intervene. If there are issues with getting out, they would have occurred way before a zip, and remember that mum will likely help a little as needed. Just let them be and all should be well.

The only reason I ask is because I had a chick a couple of weeks ago that died while zipping under a broody hen. I opened the egg after I found that it had died and the yolk was completely obsorbed.

That would be caused by a drop in humidity, the egg needs to stay moist enough under the hen; like how you shouldn't take the lid off the incubator whilst the chicks are pipping and zipping, the egg needs to stay tight under the hen.

Makes perfect since since I found the egg that morning behind the hen in stead of under her. But I just went to check and this is what I found. Looks like the little chicky will be here soon!
