I've noticed some of our eggs have a threadlike substance in the white of the egg. I am worried it could be a parasite but my wife thinks I am paranoid. If anyone could provide some insight on this I'd appreciate it.

I don't think it's a parasite...just some funky chalazae.
How long ago were eggs laid before breaking open?
How are eggs stored before use?
How old are the birds that laid them?
What all and how exactly are you feeding?

It seems that the eggs with the questionable substance are only coming from 8 month old Australorp pullets. The rest of the flock do not seem to have this in their eggs so maybe the breed has something to do with it. Birds free range and have a locally produced non GMO mash.

My wife thought it was chalazae but parasites in eggs are not something I am familiar with although I have heard it happens.

Hi there, hope you are enjoying BYC! :frow

I think the other posters are probably right. :)

But if you need to put your paranoia in check... having a fecal float done to test for parasite load is ALWAYS a good idea. Doing one a few times per year can give you a clue to YOUR parasite load and help you figure out if you need a treatment routine or not. So far, I have not in my location. Adding your general location to your profile can help peeps make the best suggestions possible at a glance. ;)

It appears as though round worms can make it into eggs.. though it's a bit rare...
