three chickens just killed. need to cope.

Three of my six chickens were attacked and killed by a as of now unknown predator.

I'm reeling, I feel horrible and anxious about my other chickens, and I really don't know how I can cope with it. They meant the world to me.

As for your survivors take pictures of crime scene so others can help you identify what will help.

Oh gosh, this is heart shattering stuff. I am so so sorry. Its never easy to lose your babies. We all understand how difficult this is.

I am so sorry for your loss. Even when you can identify the predator, it's still so hard to lose your babies.

Both you and the survivors will need plenty of time to begin healing. After a mink killed three of my four original hens, the remaining girl and I were traumatized for quite a while. She was clearly nervous, and every outdoor noise was, in my mind, another murderous predator.

The good news is that she eventually integrated into another coop with three other hens, where she is clearly the top girl, and I eventually stopped sleeping on the sofa with the windows cracked open in the middle of a frigid Iowa winter.

Take care of your remaining flock and yourself.

Thank you so much. It hasn't been easy.
We think it's a hawk. One of the other girls succumbed to her injuries, my mom suspects internal bleeding from being dropped (which I find a bit unrealistic?). No pictures but wounds were apparently like puncture wounds from a bird's talons.
