Three different temps in the bator???????

I have an Acurite and something else in my bator to check the temp and humd. These are what they say. The humd is ok, I had added water last night but on one the temps says 97.2 and the other one says 101. The Acurite inside temp says 97.2 and the outside is 103.3 I have the probe down by the eggs, that is the outside temp, right? And both of them are sitting on the turner. I have a LG with no fan. Should I leave them along? They both have new batteries. The inside temp on the Acurite just went down to 95.5. What do I do????

If you add up the 3 temps and divide by 3, you get 100.5 degrees. That is what I did when my two thermometers were different, and the hatch was fine.

Do you have a digital medical (or even a mercury) thermometer that you could get a better reading? I have a thermometer like yours (different brand) and the indoor (air temp of the bator) is always different from the outdoor temp (stuck inside a fake egg--like water wiggler). I had a couple of mercury thermometers that the kids use for science experiments and I put those in. They read right at 100. The other temps are 98.5-99.2 (indoor) and 99.5-99.7 (outdoor). I feel better knowing the mercury thermometers are right in range (a little above) with the others. I think they are more accurate and I am basing my adjustments on the mercury therm readings.

I do have a mercury one. It keeps falling down thought the turner. I'll get that one out and see what it says. I have enought room maybe I could tape it to the turner.

In a still air incubator any difference in the location of the thermometer can give different readings, unfortunatly, if the probe is on the top of the eggs or on the wire, temps can vary as much as 5 or 6 degrees. If you want to know if the thermometers agree with each other, just place them on a table in the room for an hour or so, and see if the readings are the same.

OK...I had the same problem with my Accurite. Here is what you can do with the probe end to get an accurate reading.

-Fill a styrofoam cup with crushed ice...or crush some cubes to make crushed ice
-Then fill the cup with water
-put the probe end in the cup of ice water and stir
-the temp should level out at 32 deg
-if it reads 34 then your thermometer is +2 deg, if 30 it is -2 deg off and so forth.

Hope this helps, oh and the water will not damage the probe.

This will not help with the inside temp...but it will give you an accurite temp for the probe.

Gin, I have 3 Accurites that will read different temps if you sit
them on the same table. I also have that big one with the probe.
In my opinion they are all junk.

In my LG I have been using a digital oral thermometer and stick
it through one of the tiny holes in the top of the bator. It reads
temp at 2" from the top. My LG is forced air so I keep the temp
at 101 up top to maintain a wiggler temp of 99.5.

I have another of the same medical type thermo in a wiggler. The
disadvantage is you have to open the bator to turn it on.

I completely disagree with averaging thermometers to determine
temp. That is completely unscientific.

One of my Accurites now lives in the barn so I can tell the temp and
humidity out there. It does a good job at that.

Well I did what CindyS said and it's been out for over an hour, LOL the inside temp is 90.5 and the outside temp is 75.2 and the probe is sitting right on top of it. I think it's going back to the store. I got it in Delaware at Walmart. I hope my Walmart store here will take it back.
Now I need to try the ice thing and see what happens, just for the heck of it.
