We were wondering why we weren't getting the normal production. We just have a small flock, 5 hens. Found our barred rock covering a hatch of eggs. She has never gone broody that I have seen. The co - conspirators were a swedish flower hen, who does go broody, and a easter egger who also has never done broody. They stashed their cache in the roost , and made a nest there..Not sure of they were taking turns but often heard quite the commotion in the morning.
My Question - Is this common ? For them to lay outside the nest box like this, and then appear to go broody?
