Three week old chick has a weird eye, looks wet and slightly swollen, it’s other eye is fine, it’s eating and drinking normally, this chick is a bit runty, we just washed his eye with warm salt water, it looks like it might be a pecking injury, there looks to be a very small amount of dried blood, please help, what should I do?

I would get some saline or human eye wash and rinse the eye. If there is any gunk, try to clean it out. Apply Terramycin eye ointment from the feed store or plain household Neosporin ointment 2-3 times a day. Does it look like a scratch or white mark on the cornea. Hopefully it is gunk that will come out with a QTip. I would suspect too that she was pecked in the eye, which is a common injury in chicks. You may need to divide your brooder and separate her with her own food and water. A screen or some type of netting or plastic fencing might be a good way of dividing the brooder. Are the chicks all the same age? Make sure that she is able to see to get food and water since her eye sight may not be great right now.

I think the cut is on her eyelid, it doesn’t seem to bother her, running around and foraging, there are two older chicks that we will move outside asap, but they get along, they are getting a bit big for the brooder, and I’ve let them zoom around the courtyard in case space was an issue, the injured chick is actually pretty high in the pecking order and no one really picks on her
