We have 2 pullets (21 weeks & 19 weeks old) and they have completely emptied the PVC automatic feeder that is inside the coop so that ALL of their food is on the floor of the coop.

Why are they doing this ?

And how do you stop them from doing this?

They need a feeder with a narrow or small enough opening that they cannot knock the feed out when they move their bill back and for to eat. Mine eat from a feeder with a canister set in a round pan so that there is about an inch between the rim of the pan and the canister. The bill action is along the rim of the pan so that any moved food falls back into the pan.

It doesn't have anything to do with the feed being pellets or crumbles?

Raising the feeder might also help, if its possible for you to do that. I also use a canister type feeder with the pan on the bottom. The pan that catches the feed has a lip. I've hung it at about chicken-shoulder height. I don't see a difference between the crumbs or pellets, both stay in the feeder.

I can go out and take a picture if you'd like, after it stops raining that is. I got my feeder at the co-op, I think its a Little Giant product. It holds 3 lbs. I also have a 25 lb galvanized feeder that's the same thing, just metal.
